Fire damages Blair Castle clock tower

Fire crews are investigating the cause of a blaze which damaged part of a 13th Century Scottish castle in the Cairngorms National Park. The fire, which broke out at about 2035 GMT on Thursday evening, ripped through the clock tower at Blair Castle near Blair Atholl, Cairngorms National Park. Firefighters contained the blaze and prevented it from spreading to the rest of the building. Blair Castle is the ancient seat of the Dukes and Earls of Atholl and dates back about 740 years. Seven fire crews battled to extinguish the blaze at the height of the blaze and three fire engines are still at the scene. A Tayside Police spokesman said there was a "significant amount of damage" to the clock tower. He said no-one was injured and the cause of the fire had not yet been determined. A spokeswoman for Tayside Fire and Rescue Service said the roof and second floor of the clock tower had collapsed into the first floor. www.blair-castle.co.uk

Vladimir, the Amur Tiger departs the Kincraig Wild life Park. Cairngorms

On 24th Feb, Vladimir, Amur tiger, was transferred to a new tiger facility at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. This move was recommended by the European breeding programme coordinator for Amur tigers, who is based at London Zoo. At almost 2 years old, Vlad was at the right age to be moved to another zoo as he was becoming more independent and a move at this time mirrors what would happen in the wild. His new companion will be a female from a Bulgarian zoo who will be arriving in Yorkshire shortly. Vlad’s move leaves us with his mother, Sasha, and two sisters, all of whom seem very relaxed about his departure. There is no intention to bring in another potential breeding male just yet as Sasha is past breeding age, and her daughters are not old enough....more info

Royal Deeside £100 million golf and leisure development get backing

Plans for a £100 million golf and leisure development on Royal Deeside have secured the backing of local councillors who rejected the recommendations of senior planners that the scheme should be refused.

Members of the Marr area committee of Aberdeenshire Council voted five to three in favour of the development of the major complex, including a luxury hotel, which would be centred on the existing championship course at Inchmarlo Golf Club on the outskirts of Banchory.

Although the plans by developers Frank Burnett Ltd had been backed by both Scottish Enterprise and VisitScotland as a key development in boosting tourism in the area, planning officials recommended refusing permission as the application was “significantly contrary” to the wider strategy of the local development plan.

The full council will meet on 10 March to make a final decision.

A new film starring Scots actor Dougray Scott and chef Gordon Ramsay will debut at Kingussie's Food on Film Festival.

No Ordinary Trifle's director and writer James Hacking will also be among the guests at the annual celebration of movies and cuisine.

He will be joined by actor Lee Boardman, who also stars in the film which will not be released at UK cinemas until later this year.

Time for UK Tourism businesses to get real

Despite encouraging talk in the early days of the new Coalition Government about the importance of Tourism to the economy, the reality is that the Government Spending Review has impacted on most UK tourism support structures including areas such as quality, training, sustainability and research.

The Regional Development Agencies who often led on Tourism are going and are being replaced by more localised Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs). Now Tourism finds itself pitching along with every other sector for representation and funding and however that pans out area by area, one thing is for certain, at best budgets will be cut.

Lower down the chain the recently introduced Destination Management Organisations, which took over from traditional Tourists Boards seem to be also fighting for survival and/or working on much reduced budgets. But is this a such a bad thing for Tourism? Or simply time for businesses in this sector to get real?

In reality a well run business, as many are, should already been on top of issues such as quality, training, sustainability, research; they are after all the core issues any service led business must manage in order to be competitive in a free market. In any event much assistance has been on offer in all these areas for those looking for support over the past 10 years!

Government intervention should only be required or be warranted where there is a clear market failure, not as a matter of course. Indeed, under the previous government, a market failure in tourism was addressed in terms of providing affordable online booking and therefore a route to online consumers for small business via the creation of Englandnet.

Englandnet is a destination management system which drives the publically funded Visit Britain, Enjoy England websites and many locally council funded DMO websites and enables all graded accommodation providers to make their property available online and thus compete on equal terms with larger scale businesses. Additional software was also made available for free or highly subsidized rates to accommodation providers that enabled them to push their availability to major online booking sites.

Given it now exists and small businesses and sole traders can push their offer out to various booking portals such as lastminute.com, means it really is up to businesses to employ this tool. That they choose not to is now a business choice, not a mandate as many would argue for further intervention or support. Indeed even this intervention has been subject to challenge by some within the tourism industry as being anti-competetive; and viewed as state aid by those businesses who invested their own money and time developing their own systems to reach online consumers. So it seems the Government is damned if it does or damned if it doesn't!

Equally, if a business chooses not to invest in quality and training that surely is a business decision. Most in business normally complain about government interference, however tourism has become rather dependent on government intervention, some would say too dependent. As such well run business are seemingly at a disadvantage as market forces are being skewed the other way and intervention and state aid is enabling less well run ones to keep going and where intervention has been well meant such as with online booking it has been met by both apathy and anger in many quarters. For those that believe in a free market and business self-determination, should the government be propping up failing businesses or leaving the market to decide which ones offer value for money? Especially when some within the industry challenge such interventions; this alone must lead many who look after such interventions to question their merit!

So the cuts may be a blessing in disguise!

If nothing else it will show which aspects of the tourism services traditionally offered by LA's are truly valued by local businesses.

Tourist Information Centres are an interesting point in case as they seem to divide trade opinion and go to the heart of the problem with public funding. There are many well supported private TIC's up and down the country that manage to survive through trade subs and smart retailing, no doubt established because of an identified need by local businesses to enhance the visitor experience. However and interestingly, in those areas where there have been publically funded TICs, which are now under threat of closure because of budget cuts, it seems they are less valued. Whilst many in those areas are up in arms about the loss of such a 'vital service' and actively lobby to keep them publically funded; there is little actual appetite from local businesses to take on the overheads to retain the service.

Perhaps one reason is those TIC’s are not cost effective due to never having to trade on commercial lines.

It seems that where a service has been funded, rather than developed through an identified local need, they have less value to businesses and public funding may actually inhibit co-operative local working.

So perhaps the cuts will mean that more tourism businesses work together, identify real needs, see each other as potential allies rather than competitors and take charge of their destinations future, building it from the bottom up together.

Cairngorms National Park Authority (CNPA) has been looking for park residents to register their interest in growing produce in allotments.

It said Highland Council had looked at the potential of also using care homes and hospital gardens in the area.

The efforts form part of the Cairngorms Food for Life project.

It was launched in September 2010 to reduce food miles and increase consumption of locally-grown and made produce.

Earlier this month, the project secured £58,300 of European funding.

Yuri the Amur Tiger

It was with some sadness that on 11 October 2010, Yuri was put painlessly to sleep. Yuri arrived at the Park, along with his long time mate Sasha, from Edinburgh Zoo on 25 September 2008. The arrival of the tigers was both a clear signal of our expanded species plan to include cold weather adapted animals from around the globe and not just Scottish species, and the real trigger for our greatly increased visitor numbers.

Yuri was born in Duisburg Zoo in Germany on 13 June 1993, and was sent to Edinburgh Zoo in July 1999 as recommended by the European Zoo Association’s Amur tiger breeding programme, which is coordinated from London Zoo. Yuri was introduced to Sasha later that year and mating was soon observed. They had two litters whilst at Edinburgh of three cubs each time. A few months after moving to the Highlands, mating was observed and on 11 May 2009 Yuri and Sasha again produced and reared a litter of three cubs. Although Yuri and Sasha did not always see eye to eye and their “arguments” could be heard across the Park, he was incredibly gentle with all his offspring, especially when they were very small and just starting to stumble out of the cubbing den.

As this last litter of cubs grew and became more boisterous, Yuri was observed to be keeping a lower profile, and more importantly was seen to be drinking more than normal. At 17 years old, Yuri is an old boy and as is usual in big cats of this age, we suspected that he may be developing arthritis and his kidneys were beginning to fail. If this was the case, the only outcome for him would be increasing levels of discomfort and inevitably death, and not a very pleasant one. Through testing his urine, we ascertained that his kidneys were failing and after lengthy discussions with our veterinary colleagues and the keepers who have been caring for him, we concluded that the only option open to us was to put him to sleep before the symptoms started to compromise his welfare. Simon Girling, the Zoological Society’s head of veterinary services says of Yuri’s condition, “Kidney failure is extremely common in ageing cats, both wild and domestic, as are age-related arthritic problems and sadly Yuri is showing all the classic signs. Animal welfare has to be our top priority and so this decision, although a difficult one, is the right one.” In addition, Jane Harley, the Park’s local veterinary consultant has a similar opinion, “In common with many geriatric pet cats, Yuri has kidney failure and painful arthritis. His keepers and I have been monitoring him closely and although this has been a difficult decision for everyone involved with him it has been made with his quality of life as priority”

In life he played his part in both increasing the number of his endangered species and raising the profile of the plight of Amur tigers in the wild. In death, the exhaustive post mortem examination and the distribution of key biological samples to different conservation research institutions will help expand our knowledge of this magnificent animal and may offer further clues that might aid in saving the species in the wild.

Another good season

The summer season was slow to kick off, but many of our advertisers report equal or better occupancies rates than last year. Client feedback reported that many bookings in late summer were last minute and often holiday makers were hunting down deals and discounts. So far in 2010, there were 2250+ enquiries made through Cairngorms-Park.com , which is great. With another cold winter forecasted let's hope we get another bumper Autumn/Winter season and keep the enquiries rolling in. Many of our users found that advertising on our last minute deals widget helped fill those annoying empty weeks. So don't forget to email us with your monthly saver deals or offers.

Some money matters

To advertise on Cairngorms-Park.com for the last few years has been free. To raise funds to continually improve the site, we are going to charge a small administrative fee for enhanced listings in 2011 onwards. You will always have a basic listing for free, for life, but for a small annual fee your accommodation will be promoted to a premium listing. Premium listings will ensure your accommodation details are shown above non fee paying adverts. We are currently a "not for profit" project. All revenue will be used to develop and improve the site. Charges will start at around thirty pounds per year. We hope you will agree this is value for money. SNOWSPORTS enthusiasts will enjoy another bumper season in the Cairngorms this winter, according to a local forecaster with a novel way of predicting the weather.

Forget meteorological forecasts about jet streams and new fronts moving in – Colin Matthew, 50, bases his predictions on the size of the snowberries in his garden.

After a record-breaking ski season in the Highlands last year when 145,000 people visited the Cairn Gorm resort, Mr Matthew, of Inverdruie, near Aviemore, reckons the berries could point to another winter of heavy snow.

He said: “In 2009 the snowberries in my garden appeared early in August and were particularly large.

“They budded and flowered again two or three times during the season, on each occasion coinciding with the massive falls of snow we experienced last season.”

Mr Matthew, CairnGorm Mountain Ltd’s head of ski patrol, added: “The berries are as big as ever this year, so if my theory is right we are in for another winter with a lot of snow.”

Almost 375,000 people used Scotland’s ski resorts last winter, generating £37.5million for the country’s economy – the most successful season since 1995-96.

That appears to have whetted appetites for the coming winter, with CairnGorm Mountain already receiving more than 750 applications for ski season passes

Fort William claimed the 103rd Camanacdh Cup final against Kingussie at a rainy Bught Park in Inverness. Fort's Gary Innes opened the scoring after 15 minutes with a powerful close-range drive then Brian Simpson made it two in the 40th minute.

Ronald Ross pulled one back as half time approached then Thomas Borthwick struck a 76th-minute equaliser.

As the final whistle approached, Innes fired in an angled shot from the right of the D to claim a hard-fought win.

The great outdoors is about to become your dining room at a new ‘gastro ramble’ taking place this autumn. Organised by Royal Deeside and The Cairngorms Destination Management Organisation (DMO), the 2010 TanaLonga will lead walkers through the Glen Tanar Estate in Royal Deeside taking in stunning beauty spots and four mouth-watering food stops along the way.

During the day walkers will have the chance to explore a number of historic sites, including the Chapel of St Lesmo and Victoria’s Fountain, while indulging in the finest local produce Royal Deeside has to offer. To bring the TanaLonga experience to life, story tellers and rangers will help to set the scene and answer any questions about key areas of interest.

Getting the debut event off on the right footing, a light snack of muffins, scones and pastries will be on offer at the Chapel courtesy of Woodend Barn. After a leisurely roam to Knockie View Point, walkers will be able to capture the day with a few photos taken by the TanaLonga photographer. A tasty starter will be served at this pretty location – giving walkers a quick energy boost.

Next stop on the estate is the Lime Tree, where participants will see an illicit still and sample a dram from Royal Lochnagar Distillery while listening to tales of its production in days gone by. The main course which includes a selection of locally sourced meats will be served here on picnic blankets and tables.

The last stop on the walk is the Porphyry Bridge – a stunning setting thanks to the succulent blaeberrys which cover the land at this time of year. Delicious deserts from Milton of Crathes will be served to weary walkers– a perfect way to end this new gastro ramble experience.

The TanaLonga is suitable for the whole family however some small hills will make it difficult for wheelchair users and pushchair access. Please contact organisers who will offer an alternative route, if required. Dogs more than welcome!

Comfortable shoes and waterproofs are highly recommended. The event will take place even if the weather is inclement.

Highland Wildlife Park's polar bear to be weighed

The UK's only polar bear is to be weighed to help her keepers determine the state of her health.

Mercedes was moved from Edinburgh Zoo to the Highland Wildlife Park at Kincraig in the Cairngorms Park last year.

Her estimated age of 29 is old for a polar bear, but wildlife park staff said she was healthy and in good condition.

Mercedes has been "trained" to step on to mechanical scales set up in her enclosure.

Animal collection manager Douglas Richardson said the scales were in a small passage which connects her two roofed den areas.

He said: "Although Mercedes is actually quite gentle for a polar bear, we still need to be very careful when working close to her, even when separated by a wall of steel mesh, as she is very capable of harming any one of us."

Mr Richardson added: "The real drive to get her weighed accurately is to allow us to carry out a comprehensive health check.

"She gives all the signs of being in perfect health, but she is at the upper end of a polar bear's lifespan and we want to ensure that we are not missing any potential age-related problems that may reduce her quality of life if they are not dealt with.

"All wild animals are pre-conditioned to hide illness to avoid predation or harassment, and a zoo polar bear is no exception, so her pending health check is very important."

The Newtonmore Games have always been based on tradition and 2010 is no different.

We have for your entertainment at least four Pipe Bands taking part in a spectacular festival of colour and sound.

As usual we have the spectacular sights of the Clan Macpherson Annual Rally and March to the Games. We expect to welcome many clansmen from all parts of the globe.

A great crowd pleaser as always are the heavy events which consist of many varied disciplines of strength and skill. For 2010 we are delighted to host once again a heavyweight contest.

The highland dancing is another very popular attraction as the dancers perform their intricate moves to the sound of the pipes.

You will find at the top end of the field the lone pipers competing in the Pibroch and Strathspey and Reel all hoping to please the judges.

Also on display are the athletes, young and old running sprints and middle distance races. The kids events are not to be missed.

On the athletics front the Creag Dhubh hill race is the highlight of the day.

The 2010 Newtonmore Highland Games are a day out not to be missed.

Introduction to Beekeeping in the Cairngorms

Up here in the Highlands of Scotland bees are famous for producing Heather Honey. A particular type of honey due to it being produced from the nectar of only Heather, of which there is lots of - especially here in the Cairngorms National Park!

There was great excitement in the Cairngorms-Park.com team when they were informed that the CNPA were running an Introduction to Beekeeping Course in conjunction with Highland Bee Supplies (HBS) .

Unfortunately, Susan and Al could not make it, but I headed of to the Grant Arms Hotel in Grantown-on-Spey to learn about all things honey and buzzy. The course was split into two main sections, the morning involved classroom lectures presented by Neil from HBS. The class was very informative and all the students got involved in asking all types and levels of questions. The practical in the afternoon was great, it was very hand on, and we all got to handle a live hive with over 40,000 bees. We were supplied with all the protective clothing needed, suits or smocks, and gloves. Unfortunately one or two people got stung, but that's just life when handling 40,000 bees. Rest assured, I will be putting an order in for bees in 2011.

A big thank you to Andy from the CNPA for organising the event and also to the team from Highland Bee Supplies who put on a great course. If you get a chance, I would recommend going on this course, whether you plan to get bees or not. Anyone for honey?

Below are some picture of the training course and some little info snippets. As you can see the practical was REALLY hand on...it was great!

Honey is basically nectar with added enzymes. Nectar is the clear liquid that drops from the end of a flower blossom, which is 80% water with some complex sugars. The bees suck the nectar and once their stomach is full, they return to the hive or nest. The bees need to visit between 100 and 1500 flowers in order to fill their stomach. When full it holds almost 70 mg of nectar, which is almost as much as the bee weighs itself.

Once back at the hive, worker bees suck the nectar from the honeybees' stomachs, then "chew" the nectar for about half an hour. During this time, enzymes are passed into the nectar, breaking them down into simple sugars to make them more digestible for the bees. The nectar is then spread throughout the honeycombs where it evaporates into thick syrup, aided by the bees fanning it with their wings. Once the honey is thick enough, the bees seal off the cell of the honeycomb with wax and it is stored there ready to be eaten.

Great Local Produce in the Cairngorms National Park

The Cairngorms Park and surrounding Scottish Highlands are wealthy in seasonal produce as well as scenery. Soft fruit is world class, at Alvie Estate near Aviemore they grown the Elsanta variety of strawberries and Glen Ample raspberry; these are the most outstanding varieties in terms of texture, appearance, taste and shelf life. When travelling through the National Park in early summer you will see signs everywhere advertising the sale of Alvie soft fruit, from the petrol station in Newtonmore to the butchers on Aviemore high street. Alvie soft fruit is gaining a real name for quality and flavour. Elsanta are dessert strawberries grown by the estate and are particularly sweet, large and firm with a glossy red appearance.

The seafood especially is exceptional with the opportunity of tasting scallops, langoustines, mussels and other delicious offering all caught just an hour or two drive from the Cairngorm s Nation Park in the west coast. The Park has a good share of quality restaurants where local ingredients are treated with the respect they deserve and served to perfection. Freshness is paramount when it comes to seafood and that you can be assured of when you eat at the excellent Crannog Seafood Restaurant on the pier at Fort William, just 40mins drive from the Cairngorms village of Laggan. The wonderful location is matched by the fare on offer, the tantalising menu featuring the best of west coast seafood. Another outstanding aspect of Crannog is that they have a smokehouse where locally caught fish are smoked in the age old Scottish tradition. The Deeside Brewery, situated close to the pretty village of Lumphanan in Royal Deeside, surrounded by the magnificent Grampian Mountains, this micro brewery produces a range of traditional ales using age old brewing practices, the finest ingredients and the soft, clear, delicious waters of the sparkling River Dee. In the beginning, the recipes were perfected in the kitchen of a croft and sold to local farm shops and village stores. Highland Wildlife Park shows off wildcat kitten

A wildcat kitten, which was born in captivity in the Highlands, has been introduced to the public.

The new arrival, who is yet to be named, was born in May at the Highland Wildlife Park near Aviemore.

The kitten's mother, Seasaidh, is one of the park's 12 wildcats. It is thought there may be as few as 400 of the animals in the wild.

Douglas Richardson, the site's animal collection manager, said they face extinction in the wild.

He said: "Historically they were hunted for fur and killed as vermin but more recently disease and vehicle collisions have also taken their toll."

Mr Richardson added: "Like any kitten they are incredibly cute.

"Only this one, when you get up close enough, is about as cute as a roll of barbed wire."

Walk @ The Top - Managed Cairn Gorm Walks in July

The Walk @ The Top is a 90 minute guided walk taking visitors on a circular route to the summit of the UK‘s 6th highest summit – Cairn Gorm . Visitors take the funicular up to the Ptarmigan Top Station and exit the building accompanied by a guide at all times. The route is approximately 2 miles long, on rough, uneven surfaces and includes a steady ascent in altitude of 486ft (148m). Visitors, in small groups of 10 will walk with the guide up onto the largest land mass above 3,000 ft in the UK. You must remain with your guide at all times and return back into the Ptarmigan building. With its ancient glacial landscapes, and weather similar to that nearer the Arctic Circle, the Walk @ The Top is your opportunity to experience the Cairngorms up close and personal. Access to any other parts of the mountain is not permitted.

Am I fit enough to do this walk?

- If you can walk steadily for two hours without a break and do not suffer from any serious medical conditions you should comfortably complete the walk. You will require waterproof outer clothing and walking boots or trail type shoes to participate.

Can children take part in the walk?

- The walk at the top is suitable for children aged 6 years and over. We also recognise that some children under this age are able to walk for two hours without a break and these children are welcome to join the walk too. Toddler & babies in backpacks may also participate as long as weather conditions are deemed suitable by the guide.

- The footpath conditions are not suitable for strollers, buggies or wheelchairs.

Can dogs participate in the walk?

- Registered assistance dogs only.

Why is this walk so special?

- The Cairngorm Mountains are one of Europe’s largest wilderness providing a unique habitat for many arctic/alpine plants and wildlife not normally associated with the UK. Most of the land surrounding the ski area is protected under European and UK Environmental Law.

- CairnGorm Mountain Ltd has been granted permission by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) and the Highland Council (THC) to allow managed numbers of funicular passengers exit the Ptarmigan Top Station to take part in a series of guided walks as part of a carefully managed trial.

- The trial concludes on the 31st October 2010, when the mountain railway operators will report back to SNH and THC. All being well the report will conclude that the managed programme did not impact the heart of the National Park in a negative way. Every participant in the trial Walk @ The Top programme will be invited to provide their own feedback on this trial.

Gruelling Corrieyairack event raises cash for charity

MORE than 460 athletes took part in Saturday’s gruelling Corrieyairack Challenge, a 43-mile bike, hike or run from Fort Augustus to Kincraig, near Aviemore, mostly on the remnants of the old military road built by General Wade.

Entrants could opt to make the high-pass crossing on foot for 17 miles before switching to bike at Barva Bridge for the final 26 miles, or tackling the entire route by bike.

The annual event is to raise funds for the Speyside Trust, a Scottish charity, based at Badaguish Outdoor Centre near Aviemore, providing quality respite care activity holidays for adults and children of all abilities.

Charity director Andrew MacKenzie said: “It was a super day although quite stormy at times.

“Fortunately, the cyclists had the wind behind them on the run towards the finish.”

The Cairngorms National Park Authority (CNPA) and Soil Association Scotland are stepping up the drive to increase the amount of food and drink produced locally and eaten locally!

Anyone with an interest in food and drink production in and around the Cairngorms National Park is encouraged to come along to an event next Friday (23 April) to explore ways to increase food production and consumption across the Park. The Cairngorms Food for Life Planning Day at Glenmore Lodge, near Aviemore is taking place from 10am-1pm.

The event follows on from the recent survey conducted into the National Park's food and drink sector which aimed to gather as much information as possible on who is out there, what they are producing and who is buying and selling it.

Ruathy Donald, Economic Development Officer at the CNPA said: "Next Friday's planning event is the next stage in the development and implementation of the Cairngorms Food for Life Development Plan, which aims to get more schools, hospitals and communities using produce from their local area. We hope to get everyone with an interest together to discuss some of the findings of the survey and identify some of the key opportunities that are emerging and gather ideas on how to take these forward."

Among the early initiatives emerging are the establishment of 'grow your own' projects in communities and developing food tourism initiatives across the National Park.

Lillian Kelly, Development Officer at the Soil Association said: "Food and drink production has significant potential to increase its contribution to the economic vitality of the Cairngorms National Park, by meeting growing public demand for local, healthy, low carbon food that is produced to high welfare standards. Around 45 per cent of visitor spending in the Highlands relates to food and drink, and we see a great opportunity to encourage and support further growth."

CNPA board member Alastair MacLennan said: "Using the Park's delicious local produce, whether in a restaurant or at school, will help improve health and wellbeing; provide educational opportunities; develop skills; create employment; and help our work towards creating a low carbon National Park."

How Sustainable is your Business? Aims to inform 1,000 Scottish Tourist businesses with £600,000 European Regional Development Fund Money

Scotland aims to be the most sustainable destination in Europe by 2015.

VisitScotland launched its first sustainable tourism programme today to help businesses understand how sustainable practices can improve their bottom line and in turn aid into growth in Scottish tourism.

Today’s launch at the new John Hope Gateway in Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Gardens marks the start of a series over 20 free seminars and workshops being held throughout 2010. Workshops are taking place across Scotland to encourage the maximum number of businesses to take part but minimising the impact of travel.

The Scottish government says it knows that the environment plays a large part in why people come to Scotland. VisitScotland research shows that this is a huge draw - visitors from Denmark, Spain and the US listing it as their top reason to visit from their recent Visitor Experience survey.

Three quarters of visitors also feel that Scotland protects and cares for its natural environment.
With millions of people coming to Scotland because of the landscapes and scenery and increasing pressure for businesses to show sustainable practices to visitors, Scotland feels that it has the opportunity to take a lead in line with the Scottish Government’s plans to establish Scotland as Europe’s most sustainable destination by 2015.

Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Sustainable Growth, John Swinney, launched today’s programme supported by ERDF funding, with the unveiling of a new booklet, ‘Sustainable Tourism for Dummies to Sustainability’ - produced in partnership with the Forestry Commission Scotland, Scottish Enterprise, Keep Scotland Beautiful, Loch Lomond & The Trossachs and Cairngorms National Park, Scottish Environment Link.

Mr Swinney said: “Sustainable development is at the heart of this Government’s purpose and it is something we all need to recognise as the way forward. Encouraging tourism businesses to incorporate sustainable practices will produce cost savings, and attract the environmentally-conscious visitor to view Scotland as a must-see, must-return destination.”

Aiming to attract participation from more than 1,000 businesses, the programme is working in partnership with some twenty organisations across Scotland to demonstrate the value of sustainability. Sustainable tourism isn’t just about being ‘green’ and protecting the environment, it also addresses the economic and social issues facing businesses - helping to create a sustainable community and in turn ensuring that visitors have a great experience when they come to Scotland.

Each workshop will features a range of topic including: waste, water, energy use, community engagement and local and seasonal procurement They will combine advice from experts and local sustainability champions, sustainability surgeries and one to one mentoring sessions.

Philip Riddle, Chief Executive, VisitScotland said: “Tourism growth is critical to the future of Scotland. Sustainable tourism aims to ensure that economic development as a result of tourism is a positive experience for everyone involved; the local community, tourism businesses and visitors.”

“Olympic Flame Descents” at CairnGorm Mountain

To mark the February half term break and the start of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Whistler, Canada, CairnGorm Mountain invite the public to take part in and / or watch “Olympic Flame Descents” on Monday 15th and again on Wednesday 17th February 2010.
To take part in one of these descents you are required to be a competent skier or snowboarder of intermediate/ advanced standard (able to ski confidently from the top to the bottom of the mountain). Children wishing to take part should be aged 8- 16 years and need to be accompanied by a participating adult. Spaces are limited for both events. Participants will take the funicular railway to the top station from 4.30pm, where they will be given a hot drink and a beef roll. At dusk (which we expect to be around 5.30pm), 40cm light torches will be issued to every participant by ski patrol (flashing whistles are also available for a small charge). Bungee-jumping off Garry Bridge gets go-head

THRILL-SEEKERS look set to flock to Killiecrankie, soon to be part of the Cairngorms National Park, after the first permanent bungee-jumping platform in the UK was given the go-ahead.

Murray Trail, who works with adventure tourism company Highland Fling – based at the Nae Limits unit in Ballinluig – outlined the economic benefits jumping 50m from a base underneath the Garry Bridge would bring.

He told this week’s meeting of Perth and Kinross Council’s development control committee: “We chose Highland Perthshire because it’s already established within the adventure tourism industry.

“Bungee-jumping has been commercially viable throughout the world for 25 years.

“Successful companies that have been around for that length of time are still experiencing growth.

“We expect the overall economic benefit for the area to be around £3m in year one and around £4.5m the following year.”

The jump platform is on the underside of the Garry Bridge, which spans the River Garry before joining the B8019 to Tummel Bridge.

Spectator pods will also be set-up in a small clearing off the wooded walk at the popular Pass of Killiecrankie beauty spot.

The operation will be run from the Killiecrankie visitor centre – run by the Natural Trust for Scotland – with shuttle buses taking people to the site.

Mr Trail said he hoped jumpers and spectators would explore local beauty spots as well as going in search of an adrenaline rush.

At Last....we have a Cinema in Aviemore

Since the closure of the cinema at the Old Aviemore Centre, movie-goers from The Cairngorms National Park have had to head to Inverness to see the biggest blockbusters.

But that's about to change with the latest films - including those in 3D - to be screened at the Macdonald Aviemore Highland Resort.

The very first to be shown at the new facility in the 650-seat auditorium at the resort will be James Cameron's Avatar in 3D and the newly released Astro Boy.

Following on will be Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes, Up in the Air starring heart-throb George Clooney, and the big screen adaptation of Alice Sebold's hit book Lovely Bones.

There will be three showings per day with a first release running for a week or two at 2.15pm and 5.45pm, and a second movie screened at 8.15pm.

Paths Plan for the Cairngorms National Park gets the go ahead

The Cairngorms National Park Authority has been directed to adopt a plan that lays the foundation for an effective network of paths in the Cairngorms National Park for years to come. The Core Paths Plan that has been produced by the Cairngorms National Park Authority got the go ahead from the Scottish Government following extensive consultation with the public, businesses, land managers and other organisations.

In total 1,197 people were involved in the three consultative phases. It is a blueprint for encouraging more people into the outdoors and helping land managers to manage access across land and water.

The Plan highlights an overall path network of new and existing tracks, roads, pavements and water courses in the Park totalling around 932km (579 miles) - that's further than the main road equivalent of Aviemore to London. The Plan will provide the basis for a programme of improvements that will deliver a wide range of social, economic and environmental benefits.

In a first for Scotland, the Cairngorms Core Paths Plan has designated the surface of the River Spey within the National Park as a core path. This is likely to result in a better managed river catering more effectively for the needs of the diverse range of users who enjoy it.

David Green, convener of the Cairngorms National Park Authority said "Now that the Core Paths Plan has been approved, the development of a more integrated network of paths for a wider range of people and abilities to enjoy the special qualities of the Cairngorms National Park can be taken forward.

"Once completed the work will allow users to move around and enjoy the Park more easily while minimising conflict with farmers, foresters and estates who manage the land. The Park Authority already supports the work of the Cairngorms Outdoor Access Trust and I look forward to more projects coming forward like the new school path in Strathdon and the new bridge over the River Gynack in Kingussie.

"I would also like to thank members of the Cairngorms Local Outdoor Access Forum who advised on the consultation process over a sustained period. With their input, the Park Authority went about developing the Cairngorms Core Paths Plan in a very thorough, transparent and consultative way, resulting in just one alteration being directed by the Minister following extensive consultations and a public inquiry."

The CNPA was therefore directed to adopt the Core Paths Plan as submitted subject to the deletion of a path between Nethy Bridge and Braes of Abernethy junction.

The core paths network caters for all types of users from walkers, cyclists and horse-riders, to people with disabilities and canoeists. However, not all individual paths will need to be designed or managed for every type of user. The paths included will allow people to move more easily in, around and between communities as part of their daily lives. Increased recreational use will also be encouraged and the network includes many existing paths as well as some proposals for new ones. Core paths will be easy to follow, well signposted, appropriately maintained and as far as possible free from barriers or obstructions. Paths can range from a simple trail through the grass to a more formal path with a tarmac surface.

The CNPA can now progress with a wide range of work including the production of information from leaflets to map-boards, to help promote the network to as wide an audience as possible.

Aviemore Walking and Mountain Festival

THE plug has been pulled on the Aviemore Walking and Mountain Festival which has generated nearly £500,000 for the local economy since being launched seven years ago.

And all for the sake of just £7,000. Several public agencies have given valuable support to the festival since 2003, according to the organisers, but their hands are now tied. Taxpayers' money can be used to set-up all manner of projects, gatherings and festivals and support them during their embryonic years. However, revenue funding is in short supply thereafter because events must be able to stand on their own two feet and not become a long-standing drain on public resources. Aviemore Business Association, who founded and have been running the festival, put out an appeal for wider support - financial and in-kind - to their colleagues in the private sector. But when none was forthcoming they took the decision with "great regret" to cancel this year's event. The walking festival and Badenoch and Strathspey are a perfect fit and people will come if they know about it, as was demonstrated by the turn-out of over 1,000 walkers in 2007. The expertise is still in place and the festival can call on knowledgeable walk guides who give their time for free. On the flip side of the coin, participants reap the health benefits, learn and explore more of the surrounding countryside in a safe environment and will be encouraged to return to the strath time and again. The Aviemore Walking and Mountain Festival is exactly the type of event which should be supported by Aviemore and the Cairngorms Destination Management Organisation Ltd, the Cairngorms Chamber of Commerce; and the strath's outdoors industry.

But despite growing to include other towns on both sides of the Cairngorms, weekly passenger numbers have fallen dramatically in the past four years. National park officials now claim the May to September service is too expensive and has had limited benefits for visitors. In its first two years, the Heather Hopper attracted 131 passengers a week, but figures for last year show that just 42 travelled each week. A report to go before the board of the Cairngorms National Park Authority on Friday recommends that the service be discontinued. It said that Highland Council and Aberdeenshire Council, which both contributed funding, agreed with the recommendation. John Thorne, the park’s economic development officer, said continuing the service would cost the park £35,000 but that funding could be used more effectively on other projects. He is proposing a pilot field trip fund for schools and other groups, costing £10,000. He said: “The best transport projects ensure that every pound is spent in a focused manner. However the Heather Hopper does not provide value for money and should be discontinued. “It has always been the intention to run the Heather Hopper for several more years to allow the service to bed in. However with the current decrease in budgets, the low usage numbers and the untargeted manner of funding, we can only recommend that funding for the service is withdrawn.” Mr Thorne added Stagecoach may continue parts of the service commercially. Avalanche risk in Scotland raised by crystals

Unusually calm and extremely cold weather has raised the risk of avalanches in Scotland's mountains.

Members of the Sportscotland Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) have been monitoring surface hoar, a phenomenon rarely seen in Scotland.

The snow crystals form a slippery layer when buried under snow and are the cause of many avalanches in the Alps and North America, according to SAIS.

Mark Diggins of SAIS said the Northern Cairngorms was one affected area.

He said hoar surface had formed over about 10 days of calm and extremely cold weather.

'Soap flakes'

Normally the crystals, which are created by vapour rising up from layers of deposited snow and then freezing on the surface, are destroyed in a thaw or by high winds.

Mr Diggins said: "What we have got is an unusual climate because of this prolonged cold spell. This has been throwing up some unusual things, one of them being hoar surface.

"The crystals can be quite dangerous if buried by further falls of snow as they form a very, very weak layer.

"The crystals are a bit like soap flakes and create a very slippery layer."

SAIS teams have been checking for hoar surface during routine assessments of avalanche risks in Northern Cairngorms, Southern Cairngorms, Lochaber, Creag Meagaidh and Glencoe.

SAIS provides avalanche forecasts for the five areas which are popular with climbers and skiers online and via mobile phone text messages.

Flocked to slopes

Scottish ski industry said the snow and sub-zero temperatures had helped it experience its best start to the season for years.

Thousands of skiers and snowboarders have flocked to the slopes at Cairngorm, Glenshee and the Lecht, and the operators of the Nevis Range centre near Fort William said conditions could not get much better.

The Glencoe ski area was open for business for the first time since the centre closed earlier this year amid fears about its future.

Forecasters have predicted that the cold snap will continue for the next few days, with the possibility of more snow in some areas.

Nevis Range resort celebrates 20th birthday

The Nevis Range mountain resort has reopened for the winter season exactly 20 years after it first opened.

Originally operating as a ski resort, the business, near Fort William, has grown and diversified and contributes significantly to the Highland economy.

One of the key attractions at the resort is the mountain gondola, the only one of its kind in Britain.

Since opening on 19 December 1989, Nevis Range has welcomed more than 3.5 million visitors.

The mountain gondola was originally constructed on the slopes of Aonach Mor as a way to transport skiers to the pistes.

But it became a highly acclaimed draw in its own right, attracting about 200,000 visitors annually.

Expanding business

To celebrate the 20th anniversary, the resort will be offering half price gondola trips alongside an exhibition of photos and memorabilia from the company's 20-year history.

In early 2000, as part of the diversification of the mountain resort into an all-year-round destination, the business created a downhill mountain bike track, that has hosted seven Mountain Bike World Cups and in 2007 hosted the UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships.

Marian Austin, spokeswoman for Nevis Range, said: "The past 20 years has been both exciting and challenging.

"We can't pretend that the ski industry has been an easy ride, but after 20 years, we're still in business, and we still offer winter skiing and snowboarding as well as many other activities.

''Today, we continue to employ some staff members who have been here since the beginning."

Ms Austin said there were plans to keep developing the business.

"We have our sights set firmly on the future and are working to improve existing facilities," she added.

"We also have ambitious expansion plans that will add even more activities for our visitors over the next couple of years."

Scottish avalanche warning service's season starts

With the heavy snow due later today and the snow sports season getting under way. An avalanche warning service covering five mountain areas has started its latest season. The Sportscotland Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) posts reports and forecasts online. It provides assessments for North Cairngorms, South Cairngorms, Lochaber, Creag Meagaidh and Glencoe. In January, three people lost their lives in one of Scotland's most serious avalanche incidents, which happened on Buachaille Etive Mor at Glencoe. Brothers John Murphy, 63, from Portrush and Eamonn Murphy, 61, from Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland, along with Brian Murray, 46, of Monifieth in Angus, died. The three killed were members of the An Teallach Mountaineering Club and among nine people caught by the avalanche. The SAIS is run from Glenmore Lodge, near Aviemore. The incident was one of 112 avalanches recorded by the SAIS last winter.

Yesterday's 5-1 victory for Jimmy Gow's men over Kyles saw them secure their third championship in a row on goal difference.

Typically it was Ronald Ross who gift-wrapped the silver salver with four goals, taking his season tally to an incredible 92. Youngster Ryan Borthwick got the other on a day which also marked the end of manager Gow's reign.

"Of course it is emotional," Gow said. "I have been with the club for over 30 years as a player and manager."

Climbers and walkers are to be urged by the Scottish government to take all precautions to help them stay safe while out in the hills.

Public Health and Sport Minister Shona Robinson will deliver the government's annual winter safety message later.

She is due to visit Glenmore Lodge near Aviemore where the Sportscotland Avalanche Information Service is based.

Ms Robinson is also due to meet the Mountaineering Council of Scotland's safety officer, Heather Morning.

Ms Morning features in a video uploaded by the council onto the YouTube website that gives a rundown of accident black spots in the hills.

In October, the Perth-based council encouraged walkers and climbers to go online to prepare themselves for winter conditions on Scotland's hills and mountains.

It said 10 out of 20 deaths in the mountains last year happened in winter.

The avalanche information service will start publishing reports and forecasts for North Cairngorms, South Cairngorms, Lochaber, Creag Meagaidh and Glencoe from 17 December.

Forestry Operations Divert Laggan Wolftrax

Mountain bikers planning to head up to Laggan Wolftrax from some winter trail bashing are advised to be ready for some detours. Forestry Commission Scotland has begun felling trees adjacent to the forest roads along which some of the routes run.

The work – carried out in partnership with Laggan Forest Trust – will only be carried out Monday to Friday and is expected to be completed before Easter next year.

Jim Gillies for the Commission in Glenmore, said: “We’ve scheduled the work for the quietest time of the year when there aren’t so many people coming along – so hopefully it won’t cause too much disruption. Route diversions will be in place during the week and cyclists will be diverted along the pony paths – so everyone should observe any safety notices and diversions for obvious reasons!”

The main uphill route will be open at weekends and once the felling operations are complete it is hoped that a new Blue Route, taking users off the existing forest road, can be developed. All operations will be suspended during the Christmas & New Year holidays.

Basecamp will be open for business as usual.

Cairngorms National Park covers a vast area of Scotland. The park is made up of 1,400 square miles of land ranging from the fringes of the Angus Glens to Laggan in the west, Ballater in Aberdeenshire and Grantown-on-Spey in the north.

Towns and communities in the park range from the Highland hub of Aviemore to the royal retreat of Crathie. At the heart of the park is, of course, the wild heart of the Cairngorm mountains.

British Alpine skier Ed Drake lands first podium finish of season

Britain's No 1 male Alpine skier Ed Drake got his season off to an impressive start yesterday (Monday) by recording his first podium finish of the 2009/10 Europa Cup Tour in Reiteralm, Austria.

The 3rd place result in the Super G is a personal best for the 23-year-old from Kingston and will serve him well in his bid to make a strong impression at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver in February.

Having almost pulled out of the race with a chest infection, Drake said he could not have hoped for a better start.

The first race of the season is always tough," he said. "It's the first opportunity to race against your peers and to really find out how the summer training has gone.

"It was better than I had hoped for and quite frankly I am gobsmacked as, for a time, I was top of the leaderboard too with my name up there. I beat last year's winner and I'm so pleased with my race. Third in the first race of the season feels fantastic - bring on the second race tomorrow."

With just 12 weeks to go before Canada opens its dorrs to some of the world's best winter athletes, British Alpine Ski Team coach, Mike Pilarski said Drake's result was a clear sign of his growing potential.

"Ed took the lead after his run, beating the 2009 Europa Cup Super G Champion in the process," he said. "He skied well today - his run was clean and technically good. There were a couple of key gates on the course which he handled well and that helped him over the flat sections”.

"The result is especially good when you consider he has been suffering with a bug all week and missed a lot of training in the lead up to today’s race. It puts him in a good position for the second race tomorrow."

Three other Britons were in action yesterday. Dougie Crawford (22, Glasgow) finished in 53rd position, Noel Baxter (28, Aviemore) finished in 67th position and TJ Baldwin (19, Norfolk) did not finish.

Glenlivet Estate proposals for all-year-round site

The Crown Estate is proposing to build the £700,000 trail on the Glenlivet Estate in the Carn Daimh forest near Tomintoul.

The estate says the all-year-round site featuring a cafe, bike shop and visitor centre will bring business opportunities, tourists and jobs.

But some locals want the unspoilt landscape left.

The Crown Estate’s head of countryside management, Andrew Wells, said 40% of costs – £280,000 – may be met by the European Regional Development Fund early next year. The rest could be sourced by the Crown Estate and unconfirmed partners.

He said the positive economic benefit of similar mountain bike tracks at Golspie and Laggan made the proposal attractive. “Without funding and significant community support it may not even happen,” he added.

Crown Estate countryside manager Vicky Hilton said the Daimh forest was commercial woodland with relatively low environmental benefit, rendering it the perfect location.

Steve Sacks, owner of the Argyle Guesthouse at Tomintoul, said the area should seize upon the idea before another area does.

Tomintoul-based Moray Council youth worker Raymond Asher said the proposed centre would provide training, jobs and recreation for young people.

But Crown Estate tenant farmers Alan and Tilly Smith, who keep 130-head of reindeer, were not convinced.

Mrs Smith said the reindeer herd was settled outside the perimeter of the proposed bike track but the trail would cut through their farmland.

Her concerns were for the rural area, wildcats and osprey. She doubted the suitability of the single-track road access, which would service the proposed centre, off the A939 and said she did not believe Tomintoul businesses would benefit.

Alistair Mitchell, head gamekeeper of Highland Sporting Estate which is leased from the Crown Estate, said use of the track would result in a “huge” loss of income for the estate and would disperse the woodland’s red deer population.

Fears for future of farmers’ market

rganisers of a successful farmers’ market claim half its income will be lost if permission to sell produce in a Highland town is refused.

The Cairngorms Farmers’ Market (CFM) has run regular markets in the Square at Grantown for three years, selling locally-produced meat, fish and crafts.

But it could now be forced out of the Strathspey town because council planners believe the event may ruin the grass in the historic square. Officials are recommending that the CFM’s application to use the site between May and September be rejected by the Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey planning review committee on Tuesday.

CFM organiser Fiona Young said that the decision could mean that local producers lose valuable income and could potentially lead to the end of the markets.

Most of the organisation’s events are held at Aviemore and Grantown, which is one of their most lucrative venues.

She said if the Grantown markets were lost, then producers would inevitably consider pulling out altogether because they would lose a hefty chunk of their income.

Ms Young said: “We’re not going to give up but I think that if we do not get Grantown markets then folding is definitely a possibility.”

Ms Young said the CFM also faced increased costs because it needed a separate licence for each venue used during the year.

The reason given by planners is the same as that used in the refusal of permission to a trader who applied to stage markets at Grantown.

In February, councillors said that Robert Adams’ plans for a regular market selling clothing, footwear and mobile phones would damage the vitality and viability of the town centre.

Mr Adams appealed to the Scottish Government but Reporter Douglas Hope rejected the appeal.

Ski Scotland And Save with Limited Edition, Low Cost Pass

A limited edition, low cost season pass is now available in Scotland that offers access to any of the country's five ski areas. Scotland's snow sports areas are hoping that good snow seasons come in threes after two good snow winters in a row.

The All-Areas Season Pass holders can take advantage of the best snow and best forecast weather conditions and head for whichever ski area has the best snow at any one time, (often conditions are markedly better on the western side of the country than the east, or vice versa).

The pass is valid from Dec. 2009 through to the end of Oct. 2010 and costs £439 for adults and £247 for children. Holders get a whole winter's snowsports and even an early season taster if there's good autumn snow - something which happens more often than many people realise. They are also entitled to spend some time on guaranteed indoor snow at SNO!zone, Scotland's indoor snow centre.

"The All-Areas Season Pass allows our skiers and boarders to choose east or west - wherever's best, in fact. The pass has proved popular in recent years, particularly following good periods of snow, as we have had the last two winters, and so I'd advise people to order their pass now, while it's still available." said Marian Austin, chair of ski-scotland.

Winter 2008-9 attracted many people to the Scottish snowsports areas who have not visited before, or not for a long time. All the areas reported a high number of first-time visitors who normally ski or snowboard abroad - a positive spin-off from the current economic climate.

This week has resulted in a serious thaw. We are all watching the forecast and hoping for snow.... We have attached a survival guide for Christmas giving some useful tips to help ease your visit over the Christmas break.
WEATHER
Friday 19th Dec: Wind W backing S 35-40mph gusting 55mph strengthening to 65 by dusk with gusts of 80-100mph. Snow showers above 500m heavy at times. Cloud base 900 - 1100m and down to 400m in showers. Patches of sun. Temp at 900m -1C.
Saturday 20th Dec: Wind W backing SW 20-30mph. Spells of snow above 450m but becoming a steady fall extending northwards. Cloud at times on higher northern summits. Patches of sun will fade as cloud thickens from south. Temp at 900m -1 to -2C.

SNOWSPORTS OUTLOOK FOR THIS WEEKEND
All weather dependent. At the moment there is sufficient snow to open the following lifts: Coire na Ciste, Polar Express and possibly Coire Cas T bar. The runs have narrowed considerably and we need to wait and see what the next 48 hours will bring in the way of snow.
The Christmas/New Year holiday can be a busy time and due to the large number of visitors it is likely there will be queues for services like the ticket office, ski hire and ski school. Here are a few tips to help you plan your visit.
Opening times: (from Saturday 20th December 2008)
First public train up is 9.00 am. (Other uplift may open earlier subject to conditions). Competent skiers and snow boarders are encouraged to use the lift system (if open) to reach higher runs and relieve congestion on the funicular. Last train up 3.20pm. Last train down 4.00 pm. Lifts at the top of the mountain will close earlier due to the limited numbers of day light hours. Please note that we will be closed on Christmas Day but will be open on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, Hogmanay and New Year's Day. Sight seeing visitors are most welcome and we advise them to plan their visit between 11am and 2.30pm to avoid the early and end of day congestion with skiers.
Equipment hire.
During holiday periods there can be pressure on the availability of children's ski equipment. There are other hire outlets in the area so if you are not an early riser we strongly advise you to hire off-site.
The Ski School.
They still have lesson availability but please pre-book by calling 01479 861319 (10.00-16.00). If the enquiry line is busy please leave your name and number and the Ski School will call you back.
Sledging.
The Sledge Park will be open by 10.30am daily subject to conditions. It is located just outside the Top Station and tickets can be purchased from the Shop at the Top. The presence of streams and rivers under the snow pack makes it dangerous to sledge other than in the designated area.
Walking. We recommend non skiing visitors consider a walk down the Allt Mor Trail from Coire Cas Car Park. This picturesque, easy, downhill walk (approx 2 hrs) goes from high moorland through Caledonian pine forest and finishes at Glenmore (you can return either on foot or by public bus). Full details available from the Ranger Base.
Buying Tickets
Non-skiing visitors and sledging visitors will require a funicular ticket to ride the train. If you plan to visit us more than 1 day you may want to consider purchasing a Friends of CairnGorm Mountain ticket.Snowsports visitors require a skiing ticket – this includes unlimited use of all lifts and the train. All equipment hire and lift tickets should be paid for at the ticket office prior to collecting equipment from the collection point on production of your receipt and rental deposit - credit card or cash (£200) – no passports, car keys, mobile phones or pets please!

Catering.
The Ptarmigan Restaurant (Top Station). Snacks, hot drinks, bar and hot menu. Open from 9am.
The Cas Bar (Day Lodge). Bar, Hot drinks and light snacks. Open from 9am.
Consider taking an early or a late lunch. Ski school classes do make the lunchtime period very busy between 12.30pm and 2pm.
Packed lunches can be eaten on Level 2 in the Day Lodge.
Parking, Car Sharing and Public Transport.
If you are planning to visit consider car sharing with friends (from Aviemore) or taking the public bus. This will help car park availability for everyone. Park and Ride Shuttle Bus will operate from the Ciste Car Park subject to demand.
Ski Ambassador Tours.
Tours of the ski area led by our Hilton Ski Ambassadors will take place daily – meeting point Top Station exit doors at 11.30am. These are free of charge for all skiers and snowboarders. Suitable for level 3/4 skiers and above (i.e. not beginners).
